Overview

Why homeowners choose IronWrap for standing seam

Standing seam is the gold standard of residential and commercial metal roofing. Vertical interlocking seams rise above the panel surface, creating a fully weather-tight seal with no fasteners exposed to the elements — which means nothing to back out, rust, or leak in 30 years.

The clean modern lines work equally well on contemporary architecture and traditional homes that want an upgrade from asphalt without going overly rustic. Every system is engineered to meet the wind-uplift and snow-load classifications set out in the National Building Code of Canada — and available in dozens of finishes from matte black and crystal black to copper penny, iron ore, and patina copper.

Our standing seam systems use concealed fasteners with floating clips that allow the panel to expand and contract through Alberta's full temperature range without stressing the seams. Combined with heat-reflective underlayment and custom-fabricated flashings, it's a roof you'll install once and forget about. Prefer a more traditional profile? Compare with our metal shingles and European metal tile systems.

Edmonton homeowners deciding between systems often start with our buyer's guides: Metal Roof vs Asphalt Shingles covers the long-term cost math; Standing Seam vs Metal Shingles vs Tiles is the head-to-head between the three metal profiles. Both are written for homeowners with no metal-roof experience, with cost ranges, lifespan data, and pitch-by-pitch architectural recommendations.

Pricing

Standing Seam cost in Edmonton (2026)

Typical installed range

$12–$18 per sq ft, installed

Standing seam is the premium metal roofing family — concealed-fastener vertical panels, lifetime warranty, modern profile. Edmonton pricing depends mostly on which lock system you choose and the gauge of the panel. Snap-lock sits at the low end of the range; mechanical-lock at the top.

What drives your standing seam cost

  • Snap-lock vs. mechanical-lock (mechanical commands a 10–15% premium)
  • Panel gauge (24 ga vs. 26 ga — thicker is stronger and pricier)
  • PVDF (Kynar 500) vs. SMP coating
  • Custom flashing complexity (see [custom sheet metal](/custom-sheet-metal))
  • Roof pitch and accessibility
  • Tear-off of existing roofing

Common Questions

Standing Seam FAQs

Quick answers to what homeowners ask before they sign on for standing seam.

See all FAQs
What's the difference between snap-lock and mechanical-lock standing seam?+

Snap-lock panels click together by hand; mechanical-lock panels are crimped together with a tool for a tighter seal. Snap-lock is sufficient for most residential roofs over 3:12 pitch; mechanical-lock is recommended for low-slope, high-wind, or commercial applications.

Will it expand and contract noticeably?+

Yes — and our floating-clip system is designed to allow it. Across a 30-foot panel run, you'll see ~1" of movement between summer and winter. The clips let the panel slide; the seams stay sealed.

Can standing seam be installed over my existing asphalt roof?+

Sometimes — it depends on the deck condition and local code. We typically recommend full tear-off so we can inspect and properly install underlayment. Skipping that step trades cost savings today for ice-damming and ventilation problems later.

What's the most popular colour?+

Matte black and matte charcoal lead by a wide margin, especially on contemporary and modern-farmhouse homes. Copper Penny and Iron Ore are popular for warmer architectural styles.

What gauge of standing seam steel do you install in Edmonton?+

Our default is 24-gauge pre-finished steel with a PVDF (Kynar 500) finish — the residential and light-commercial standard in Alberta. For agricultural shop roofs and structural commercial applications we step up to 22-gauge. 26-gauge is available as a budget option but we generally don't recommend it for Edmonton snow load and hail conditions.

How long does a standing seam install take on an Edmonton home?+

Typical residential install is 4–8 working days from tear-off through final cleanup, depending on roof complexity, weather, and whether tear-off of existing shingles is required. We schedule sequentially so the home is never left exposed overnight. Larger or steeper roofs and acreage shops can run 1–3 weeks.
